Excess Sweating - Don't Sweat it On the Hottest Day of the Year!

By SkinCareGuide.ca

Okay, today may not be the hottest day of the year, but for one in twenty people, excess sweating is a daily problem that the rest of us can only relate to on extremely hot days.

There are approximately 2 to 4 million sweat glands in the human body performing an important bodily function that allows us to control our body temperature. For some people sweating excessively is a daily concern. This condition is called hyperhidrosis.

Usually the problem occurs on the underarms, palms of your hands or soles of your feet. It may be an inherited condition that usually appears in adolescence, but it can also begin in childhood or even in infancy. This condition, although it is not dangerous, for some people it becomes an embarrassing condition that has a huge impact on their daily lives. Learn more on www.Sweating.ca.

For people who suspect they have hyperhidrosis, there are treatments available. It is important to discuss your options with your physician.

Before you start treatment, it is important to make sure that your excess sweating is not being caused by another reason; "secondary hyperhidrosis". Menopause, obesity, a metabolic disorder or nerve damage, an overactive thyroid, certain medications can all lead to excess sweating. If this is the case, you need to see your doctor to treat this underlying condition.

Here are some of the treatments available for hyperhidrosis:

  • Antiperspirants; Metal Salt Based Antiperspirants are commonly used
  • Systemic Medications; Medications can be used but often the side-effects are unpleasant
  • Surgery; Used if other treatment options have failed
    • Severing the sympathetic nerves linked to the sweat glands (sympathectomy);
    • Blocking the sweat glands with small galvanic electric currents (iontophoresis).
  • Botox™; These agents block acetylcholine and Botulinum toxin (Botox®) is injected under the skin and produces a sustained, localized decrease in sweating by inhibiting the transmission of nerve impulses that trigger sweating. Read more on www.BotoxFacts.ca .

If sweating is keeping you from social occasions, impacting your day to day living or causing undo stress, maybe its time to talk to your doctor about treatment options.
