Synonym:

Male-pattern alopecia

Androgenetic alopecia is the progressive miniaturization, and finally hair loss, secondary to the presence of androgens.

Male-pattern thinning can be noted as early as the late teens, but both types are almost ubiquitous by age 50.
The degree of hair loss tends to be influenced by multifactorial hereditary.

Treatment:

  • Minoxidil 2% lotion applied topically bid is sometimes effective, although it may take up to a year to note hair regrowth.
  • Hair transplants are effective in selected patients.
