Chloroquine phosphate

Chloroquine phosphate (Aralen®) is used to treat progressive cutaneous lesions of systemic lupus erythematosus or discoid lupus erythematosus resistant to topical or intralesional glucocorticoids.

Precaution:

  • Pregnancy is a relative contraindication.

Adverse effects:

  • Irreversible dose related retinal damage can occur. Retinal function, including visual fields, must be monitored at 3 month intervals during long term therapy.

Dosage:

  • A typical dosage is 250 mg po daily.
