Disseminated intravascular coagulation

Lesions typical of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) are large ecchymotic lesions. These very extensive, frequently symmetrical areas of purpura may show hemorrhagic bullae and can be associated with distal gangrene.

The development of DIC is potentially fatal.

Treatment:

• An appropriate consultation with a hematologist should be sought urgently.
• Treatment can include, paradoxically, the administration of systemic anticoagulants.
