Ecthyma

Ecthyma is a pyogenic infection of the skin apparently caused by both streptococci and staphylococci, alone or in combination, and is characterized by a dark crust covering a pus filled ulcer, both being surrounded by a broad rim of erythema. The primary lesion is a pustule.
Ecthyma is more common in tropical areas of the world, and is more common where hygiene is poor.

Treatment

  • Removal of the crust aids in drainage.
  • Systemic antibiotics against both staphylococci and streptococci are indicated.
