Erythema ab igne

Erythema ab igne is a reticulate hyperpigmentation resulting from the repeated exposure of the skin to heat.
It is most common on the legs, but can occur anywhere that chronic heat is applied.
It is less common since the decline of the open fireplace in homes.
Hot water bottles and electric heaters, commonly used for sore backs, are a relatively common cause today.

Treatment:

  • Avoid the source of heat. This, nowadays, usually involves diagnosis and treatment of the cause of the pain for which the patient is seeking relief with the hot water bottle or heating pad.
