Erythema nodosum

Erythema nodosum is a nodular inflammation of the deep dermis and subcutaneous tissue.
Broad based erythematous, tender tumors can appear on the skin. These lesions may be up to 10 cm in diameter. They are most common on the lower extremities. Appearing in crops, the condition can wax and wane for years. Late lesions may appear golden-brown.
Women are more likely to develop erythema nodosum than men, suggesting that estrogens are an etiologic factor.
Erythema nodosum is usually idiopathic but can be associated with a host of systemic problems.

Treatment:

• Reduced activity and bed rest may be needed
• Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories such as Indomethacin and Naprosyn are useful
• Colchicine, hydroxychloroquine, and Dapsone have been used as second choice treatments.
