Erythromelalgia

This condition is characterized by burning pain in the extremities. Pain is increased on both warming and cooling of the skin. The skin feels warm and erythema is seen.
This condition may be idiopathic or secondary to peripheral vascular disease or amyeloproliferative disease, such as thrombocythemia.
The idiopathic type can occur in childhood and be inherited as an autosomal dominant trait.

Treatment:

  • Treat the underlying cause
  • Cooling
  • Case reports show benefit from Aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories
  • Gabapentin, calcium channel blockers, and anti-depressants have also been tried
