Follicular mucinosis

Synonym:

Alopecia mucinosa

Follicular mucinosis is manifested by the development of infiltrated, often scaling, pink to red plaques, with a loss of hair within the plaque.
Not uncommon in children, lesions can clear spontaneously within one to two years.
Follicular mucinosis occurring in the adult is associated, in perhaps 10-15% of cases, with the coexistence of a cutaneous lymphoma.
The follicular mucinosis can be a presenting symptom of the lymphoma but it usually occurs well after the diagnosis of lymphoma has been made.

Treatment:

• Case reports show benefit from the use of Dapsone, mepacrine, tetracycline, isotretonoin and PUVA
