Hemochromatosis

Hemochromatosis is an iron-storage disorder resulting predominantly from increased iron absorption from the gut where there is deposition of iron in the form of hemosiderin in many tissues.
A third of untreated patients with hemochromatosis develop hepatocellular carcinoma.
The pigment seen in hemochromatosis does not appear to be predominantly caused by iron, as the development of vitiligo causes a complete loss of pigment.

Treatment

  • Venesection of 500 ml every 1 to 2 weeks for 1 to 2 years can be very effective.
