Henoch-Schönlein purpura

Henoch-Schönlein purpura is a leukocytoclastic vasculitis.
Immune complexes are found in the vicinity of the disrupted blood vessel walls.
Lesions are typically 2-4 mm papules or papulopustules with non-blanching erythema surrounding them. Most prominent on the lower extremities, they are occasionally tender. Uncommonly, ulceration can occur.
Henoch-Schönlein purpura is a self-limited condition that generally clears within 4-8 weeks without treatment. Nephritis can occur, and repeat urinalysis should be performed 4-6 weeks after development of the eruption and again at 4 to 6 months.

Treatment

• No treatment has been shown to significantly alter the course of the disease.
• Close renal follow-up is indicated with, at the least, repeat urinalyses at subsequent visits to 6 months.
