Hirsutism
Hirsutism is an increase of terminal (adult) hairs in androgen dependent areas such as the groin, axilla, nipple, and face. There is wide variation in normal hair growth.
Hirsutism can also be secondary to steroid excess caused by polycystic ovaries, Stein-Leventhal syndrome, ovarian tumors, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, Cushing's disease, gonadal dysgenesis; oral androgen excess (drug), and can be idiopathic.
Treatment:
- Depilatory such as shaving or creams
- Epilatory, waxing, electrolysis, laser therapy, light therapy
- New treatment
- Eflornithine cream

- Oral contraceptives plus or minus cyproterone acetate
- Spironolactone
