Keratosis pilaris atrophicans

Keratosis pilaris atrophicans comprises a group of conditions characterized by follicular erythema and permanent hair loss with scarring.

Conditions:

Ulerythema ophryogenes

Horny plugs in inflamed follicles in the eyebrows, present from early childhood and progressing to complete follicular destruction. The lateral eyebrows are usually involved first.

Also known as "honeycomb atrophy". This condition presents in childhood with prominent keratin plugs in inflamed follicles of the malar and other facial skin. Reticulate atrophy develops as the plugs are shed. Milia may be present.

Starting in early childhood, follicular plugs evolve to atrophy on the central face, eyebrows, scalp, and extensor limbs. In hair bearing areas there is scarring alopecia.

Treatment:

• No treatment has been demonstrated to be very effective, although topical or systemic retinoids may be beneficial.
