Mastocytoma

Mastocytomas are localized collections of mast cells. Typically .5 to 1.5 cm in diameter, they have a yellow-red-brown color. Stroking the lesion elicits an urticarial response, Darier's sign.
Extensive mast cell involvement of the skin is called urticaria pigmentosa.

Treatment:

  • Solitary mastocytomas resolve without treatment.
  • Most lesions present in early childhood are gone by age 10.
Treatment for Urticaria Pigmentosa
  • H1 antihistamines, H2 antihistamines, disodium cromoglycate
  • Topical steroids
  • PUVA
  • Case reports showing help from cyclosporine, nifedipine and pulse dye laser
