Nevus of Ota

Synonym:

Ocular and dermal melanocytosis

Nevus of Ota is most common in Japanese and Chinese. It commonly appears in late childhood or early adulthood and can slowly progress in extent.
Clinically there is a blue discoloration of the malar and periorbital skin, often with extension to the sclera.
There can be an associated brown, sometimes speckled, lentigo overlying the blue lesion.
Malignant transformation is rare, but can occur.
When this lesion occurs on the shoulder or chest it is known as Nevus of Ito.

Treatment:

  • Considerable improvement can be produced by multiple treatments with the Q-switched ruby laser.
