Pediculosis corporis

Pediculosis corporis is caused by the louse Pediculus humanus humanus. Unlike the head louse, the body louse deposits eggs on clothing.
Examination of the skin shows only evidence of the itch caused by the infestation, numerous excoriations. Examination of clothing, particularly around the beltline and collars, will frequently show the louse. There may be an associated secondary infection.

Treatment:

• Because the eggs and most lice are on the clothing, not on the individual, treatment should be directed at the clothing. The clothing should be washed in very hot water. Ironing is very important to destroy any eggs in the seams. An alternative is to dry-clean the clothing.
• The patient, after examination for evidence of pediculosis capitis and pediculosis pubis, should have a thorough bath.
