Pediculosis pubis

Pthiriasis pubis

Pediculosis pubis is caused by the louse, Pthirus pubis, aptly named the crab louse because of a morphology similar to that of a crab.
Pruritus is common.
Examination of hairs in the pubic area, and occasionally axilla, shows crab like lice grasping the hairs close to the skin surface. Egg cases can be visible on the hair shaft.
This organism can also inhabit other hairy areas of the body.

Treatment:

• Gamma benzene hexachloride solution applied for 8 hours is highly effective. Repeat in one week. The groin and axillae of affected individuals should be treated.
• Alternative lotions include those containing pyrethrin or permethrin.
