Pinta

Pinta is a chronic infection caused by Treponema carateum. It is usually acquired in childhood by direct contact. It is found in the Caribbean basin and Andes.
Initial lesions are erythematous macules and papules, that tend to grow by the development of satellite lesions. From 2 to 5 years after infection, after the fading of the initial lesions, gray to bluish chronic lesions can develop.
There can be extensive hyperkeratosis of the extensor skin, that can resolve with atrophy.

Treatment:

• Benzathine penicillin 2.4 million units IM in a single dose is curative.
• Late stage atrophy may persist.
