Pitted keratolysis

Synonym:

Keratolysis plantare sulcatum

Pitted keratolysis is a superficial infection of heavily keratinized skin caused by species of Corynebacterium or Streptomyces.
Commonly seen in the presence of plantar hyperkeratosis and hyperhidrosis, lesions are punctate pits, coalescing in areas to form serpiginouslyedged erosions.
Usually painless, there may be an associated malodor.

Treatment:

• Topical antibiotics such as fusidic acid* or imidazole can be highly effective, as can 10% glutaraldehyde solution, applied daily for 10 days.
• Control of the hyperhidrosis may be necessary to prevent recurrence.
