Rifampin

Rifampin (Rifadin®, Rimactane®) is used in the treatment of leprosy, Nocardia mycetoma, and other infections with sensitive organisms.

Contraindication:

Jaundice - rifampin can produce liver dysfunction and increase pre-existing liver damage.

Precautions:

• Pregnancy - while it has been used in pregnancy successfully, rifampin may be teratogenic at high dosage.
• Pregnancy - post partum hemorrhage in mother and infant can occur, and both should receive vitamin K.
• Ketoconazole reduces the efficacy of rifampin, and vice versa.

Adverse effects:

• Patients should be warned that their urine will be a reddish orange.
• Transient elevation of liver enzymes, and rarely, jaundice.

Dosage:

• Rifampin is used in combination with other systemic medications for the treatment of leprosy.
• Standard dosage is 600 mg monthly for 6 months or more.
