Scalp psoriasis
Some patients have psoriasis limited to the scalp.
Treatment:
- The mainstay of treating scalp psoriasis is the use of a tar shampoo on a daily basis. The tar shampoo must be left on the scalp long enough for some penetration of the active ingredient, at least five minutes.
- Topical glucocorticoids in a lotion base, such as betamethasone 0.1% lotion bid-tid, are also very helpful.
- Trauma, such as damage from a comb or from scratching, must be avoided.
- Very thick scales on the scalp respond to the application of an oil or salicylic acid preparation which is left on overnight, under a shower cap, and washed off in the morning.
