Streptomycin
Streptomycin, in combination with other agents, is useful in the treatment of tuberculosis, mycetoma, and other infections with sensitive organisms.
Precautions:
- The risk of neurotoxicity is increased if there is renal impairment.
- Many drug interactions - see your compendium.
Adverse effects:
- Ototoxicity - nausea, vomiting, vertigo, deafness.
- Urticaria and other skin reactions.
Dosage:
- Typical dosage is 1 to 2 gm/day, intramuscularly.
