Streptomycin

Streptomycin, in combination with other agents, is useful in the treatment of tuberculosis, mycetoma, and other infections with sensitive organisms.

Precautions:

  • The risk of neurotoxicity is increased if there is renal impairment.
  • Many drug interactions - see your compendium.

Adverse effects:

  • Ototoxicity - nausea, vomiting, vertigo, deafness.
  • Urticaria and other skin reactions.

Dosage:

  • Typical dosage is 1 to 2 gm/day, intramuscularly.
