Sulfasalazine

Sulfasalazine (SalazopyrinŽ) is used dermatologically for the treatment of pyoderma gangrenosum, idiopathic or secondary to ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, or collagen vascular disease.

Contraindications:

  • Porphyria
  • Sensitivity of ASA or sulfa

Precautions:

  • Bone marrow suppression can occur. Blood counts before and two weekly early in therapy are indicated.
  • Safety in pregnancy has not been established.
  • Many drug interactions - consult your compendium.

Adverse effects:

  • Nausea, vomiting, GI distress
  • Methemoglobinemia
  • Bone marrow suppression
  • Hypersensitivity reactions, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome.

Dosage:

  • Pyoderma gangrenosum may require up to 6 gm daily.
